Romans Chapter 5 covers two areas, both of which are important for us so we can understand who we are in Christ. The two areas are peace with God and the idea that we now have life in Christ
Peace with God
One of the most important things that happens when by faith we believe in Jesus Christ is that we have peace with God. Romans Chapter 5 starts off with this concept. You have to realize is that the unbeliever is at war with God. If you remember the first couple of chapters, we are told the wrath of God is upon both Jew and Gentile! But now, “since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”
Glory in our sufferings
Because of that we can boast in the hope of glory, which is our salvation. We also “glory in our sufferings”! What? who wants to glory in our suffering. Who wants to suffer! Isn’t this walk suppose to be a cakewalk? Yet we are clearly told that in order for our character to be built we need to suffer for Christ. And as we grow in Christian character, our hope increases. As we mature we understand how great is the love of God that “has been pored into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.”
How much more!
Verse 9 and 10 talk about “how much more” we are saved from God’s wrath through Christ and “how much more ” having been reconciled, we will be saved through His life.
From death to Life
Verse 12 to the end of the chapter covers a subject that we so often just skip over. We understand that we have all sinned but as verse 13 tells us, “… sin is not charged against any ones account where there is no law.” We are told we are counted as sinners because Adam sinned but the Law didn’t come until Moses. How does this work?
All in Adam
Since Adam is the first man then every human being was technically in his loins. Therefore, when he sinned; we all sinned through him. Yes, we all in ourselves also sinned but just as we are all counted as having died in Christ, so we all were part of the original sin! This is a concept we need to grasp. That one sin, which we were all partakers of, caused us to be enemies of God. Separated from Him. With a sentence of Death upon us.
Grace through Christ
This is the reason Jesus Christ died. To remove the curse from those who would believe in Him. This is called justification and it is through Grace, the unmerited free gift of God. The one righteous act of Christ being obedient and dying on the cross has resulted in justification and life for all people. This righteous act is much greater than the sin of Adam. And, it is free to all those who by faith believe in Jesus Christ.
